Who Is Billy Joel?

Billy Joel, born May 9, 1949, is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. Nicknamed the Piano Man, after his 1973 signature song of the same name, he has had a successful career as a solo artist since the 1970s. From 1971 to 1993, Joel released 12 entirely self-written studio albums. In 2001, he released a one-off studio album of classical compositions. With over 160 million records sold worldwide, Joel is one of the world's best-selling music artists and is the fourth-best-selling solo artist in the United States. His 1985 compilation album, Greatest Hits – Volume I & Volume II, is one of the best-selling albums in the U.S.

After writing River of Dreams, Billy decided that he had said all he needed to say and retired from releasing music. In 2001, he released Fantasy and Delusions, an album of orchestral pieces for the piano composed by him and performed by Hyung-ki Joo. In 2007, he released ‘All My Life’ and ‘Christmas in Fallujah’. 17 years after the release of Christmas in Fallujah, he would release his latest single, ‘Turn The Lights Back On’. He would continue to perform until late 2025, when he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, which caused issues such as problems with his hearing, vision, and balance. In September of 2026, he revealed that he had gotten a brain shunt; there is no current news on whether he plans on returning to the stage.

My History with Billy Joel

I first got into Billy in 2022. I was at my aunt’s house in Florida; we were visiting because she was getting married. It was a few nights before the wedding; I believe we had finished playing trivia. I excused myself to go to the car while my mom and grandma finished talking inside. I slid into the backseat. I sat there for a moment as the radio flipped to the next song, and out came the ‘You May Be Right’. To me, it was love at first sight. I worked my way through his discography slowly. One by one, I discovered that I had known more of his songs than I realized. I had unknowingly grown up with him and didn’t realize till years later!

As of 2026, I have seen him in concert twice! I saw him at Notre Dame Stadium in 2023 and Lucas Oil Stadium in 2025. I was actually at the last concert he performed at before his health took a hard hit. Outside of that, I have seen Dogs of Society/Billy The Kid (a tribute band) perform twice in Nashville, Indiana. Over the years, I’ve built a collection of Billy Joel memorabilia: a pin celebrating over 100 concerts at Madison Square Garden, a cutout album with his face on it, several albums, and over 22 different Billy Joel shirts.
