"My Uncle Alex, who is up in Heaven now, one of the things he found objectionable about human beings was that they so rarely noticed it when times were sweet. We could be drinking lemonade in the shade of an apple tree in the summertime, and Uncle Alex would interrupt the conversation to say, 'If this isn't nice, what is?' So I hope that you will do the same for the rest of your lives. When things are going sweetly and peacefully, please pause a moment, and then say out loud, 'If this isn't nice, what is?'
Kurt Vonnegut, If This Isn't Nice, What Is?: Advice for the Young
We spend a lot of time talking about Kurt in my Indiana Literature class. Admittedly, I did not know much about him before this year. Of course, I had heard of Slaughter House Five, but I never recongnized his name anywhere. Now it seems I have taken quite the liking toward him.
Of course, his idea of happiness has come up a million times and admittedly, I have grown fond of it. It's strange because I've heard quotes like it before, but none have stuck so close to me, the way this one has. So this is a list of the things that make me say, "if this isn't nice, what is?"
- When the shower is the perfect temperature (not too hot, but not super cold)
- Watching horrible movies and tv shows with people who also like horrible movies and tv shows (Me and my parents love watching 9-1-1 Lone Star despite the fact, it is terrible)
- Getting a bad day (Ice cream, specifically Dairy Queen) after a long soccer game
- Having lunch with your best friends
- Getting 100% on a math test even though you suck at math
- Ice cream!
- Doing nothing else in class after taking a test or quiz
- Seeing your favorite musician in concert!
- Winning an award for your hardwork
